What are acne scars?

Acne scars happen when acne grows inflamed due to extra oil, bacteria, and dead skin cell buildup in the skin pores. The inflammation causes the pore to swell and breaks its wall. A minor crack in the upper part of the pore generally heals fairly fast. 

But a deeper break within the pore wall can spread oil, dead skin, and bacteria into the nearby tissue. Although your body tries to repair the damage, that repair doesn’t look the same as the skin around it, leading to the scar. 

The main types of acne scars are:

Atrophic acne scars

Atrophic acne scars cause a depression in the skin. The two most common examples are “icepick” scars, with tiny holes in the skin, and “boxcar” scars, with round or oval depressions. 

Hypertrophic acne scars

Hypertrophic acne scars, or keloids, are the opposite of atrophic scars. They rise above the skin to form a prominent bump or line. 

Some people may have both types of acne scars.
