Mohs surgery differs from other types of dermatological treatments in that skin is examined under a microscope while the patient is still in the doctor’s clinic, so that more skin can be removed if found necessary. The technique was invented by Frederic Mohs, a general surgeon in 1938. Since then, the technique has become very popular the world over as a sound technique to treat certain forms of skin cancer.
The procedure has a very high success rate and ensures that you will leave the clinic cancer free (99% success rate in some types of skin cancer). It also preserves healthy skin.
Advantages of Mohs Surgery
- Treats two most common types of skin cancer: Mohs surgery is most successful in treating squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas. These are the most common types of skin cancer. In some cases, it can also be used to treat melanoma.
- Best for visible areas: This technique is used most often to treat cancers present in visible anatomic areas like the hairline, nose, ears, hairline, lips and eyelids, where preservation of healthy tissue is very important.
- Surgery under local anesthetic: Mohs surgery is very convenient and safe because only a local anesthetic is used. The discomfort is very mild and in the end, maximum healthy tissue is saved. If there is any residual discomfort, the doctor can prescribe analgesics to deal with it.
- Less scarring compared to other surgeries: There are also less chances of scarring compared to other types of skin surgery. After undergoing Mohs surgery, you can quickly go back to your day-to-day routine. The affected area will have to be protected for some time, however.
