The ARTAS® Difference: FUT vs. FUE

Two of the most popular hair restoration procedures in use today are Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Both methods involve the relocation of follicular units (hair roots) that can produce anywhere from 1 to 3 hairs. The two procedures, however, differ in how they are performed, as well as in aspects of the patient’s recovery.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Patients who select FUT as their preferred method of hair restoration should expect to undergo an invasive surgical procedure that involves a strip of follically robust skin being removed from their scalp. The surgery will conclude with the patient’s donor area being sutured shut, after which they will be left with a scar that is clearly visible under short haircuts.

The ARTAS® Difference: FUT vs. FUE

In order to ensure that FUT patients complete a successful recovery process, We strongly recommend that they follow a weeks-long regiment of restricted activity while managing the following symptoms with carefully monitored prescription medications:

  • Tightness of the scalp
  • Lingering pain at the surgical site
  • Tingling and/or numbing sensations

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

A handful of recent technological advancements in the field of hair restoration have lead to the recent rise in popularity of the FUE method of hair restoration.Being that follicular unit extraction is a minimally invasive, virtually pain-free procedure that allows robust follicular units to be harvested directly from the back and sides of the patient’s head, no surgical incisions or stitches are needed. After only a few days of recovering from a minimal amount of swelling and discomfort, the patient can return to their regular activities with the confidence of having no visible linear scar.

The ARTIS® Difference

Using Robotic Technology for Advanced Precision in Our FUE Procedures at Robotic Hair Restoration of New Jersey, we perform FUE procedures using the ARTAS® Robotic Hair Transplant system. With this system, we are able to use advanced digital imaging and algorithms to identify which hairs are most suitable for harvesting. We are also able to rely on the precision of this state-of-the-art technology for the harvesting and transplantation process, allowing for a much higher level of accuracy and speed in comparison to manual methods.

Most patients who had a previous “strip” or FUT hair restoration procedure usually do not have a second procedure because of the pain they experienced, sleepless nights encountered, and recovery time involved. We are finding that those patients are now electing to have a second hair restoration procedure with the ARTAS® Robot to either increase their density or to address another area. They can’t believe how easy and nearly painless it is and wished this technology were available to them sooner. Their downtime is much shorter, and they have no problems sleeping at night like they experienced with the strip procedure.
